To book me as a speaker, click here. “The Transformative Power of Telling Our Intersectional Stories” Clips from Keynote for Peapod Digital Labs on International Women’s Day Keynotes &amp; Presentations The Transformative Power of Telling Our Intersectional Stories This talk clarifies the difference between intersectionality and the intersections of identity, then highlights how telling both kinds of stories can resonate with countless people across the globe. I demonstrate how sharing our intersectional stories can foster empathy, connect us to one another, and support the creation of more compassionate workplaces and a more just society. This can only help us at a terribly disconnected, contentious time. An excellent talk for events focusing on community, unity, belonging, service, freedom, DEI&amp;B, women, interculturalism, and/or international education. The Resonance of Intercultural Stories This talk highlights how intercultural stories validate the experiences of countless people. My film Alien Citizen: An Earth Odyssey is used as an example of the transformative power of intercultural, intersectional, and inclusive storytelling. I weave together clips from the film, thought-provoking ideas about intercultural upbringing and creativity, and personal reflections on making Alien&nbsp;Citizen. As a first-time filmmaker yet seasoned performer, I offer a unique perspective on the possibilities of intercultural creative expression and how we can honor and include diverse people’s stories. The talk also shows how Alien Citizen resonates for people who are not intercultural because the story reveals human truths with which they can empathize. Thus, intercultural storytelling connects different people in ways they don’t often expect.&nbsp;An affecting presentation for DEI&amp;B within an international context. Alien Citizen: An Earth Odyssey - Filmmaker Talk-back Alien Citizen: An Earth Odyssey is the award-winning film of a funny and moving one-woman show about growing up in the intersections of identity, as a dual citizen of mixed heritage in Central America, North Africa, the Middle East, and New England. After the screening, my lively and engaging talk-back helps participants learn more about Third Culture Kid (TCK) and Cross-Cultural Kid (CCK) issues and at the same time learn about the processes of filmmaking, theatremaking, and intercultural storytelling in general.How Hiring a Sensitivity Reader Can Result in a Better Book This talk illustrates how working with a sensitivity reader can connect an author more closely to human experiences they haven’t had and thus enhance and improve their writing and the story they’re telling. Increased understanding and compassion does that for creative work, which in turn helps create a more just society. I give my perspective as a mixed race Third Culture Kid who is not from one place, speaking one language, descended from the people of one region or one continent—I’m both/and, so I’ve always lived in the intersections of identity. Also, as a woman of color, I’ve experienced intersectionality. In this talk, I distinguish between the intersections of identity and intersectionality, because this awareness can assist writers. I include numerous examples of the need for sensitivity readers with different areas of personal experience and additional expertise. Sensitivity readers help writers to understand their fellow humans better, which can be enormously helpful in creative work and in life. By the end of this talk, you’ll have more reason to be inspired to hire a sensitivity reader. Alien Citizen: An Earth Odyssey Who are you when you’re from everywhere and nowhere? Elizabeth Liang's new solo show explores the concept of home in terms of place, family, and one's own body, with references to her birthplace of Guatemala; the Japanese invasion of China; her relationship with her loving, brilliant, mercurial grandmother; and her own identity as someone who "began" as a Guatemalan but can no longer fully claim the culture as her own. Since her peripatetic childhood made “home” less about place and more about people—especially the elders—what does it mean when the elders are gone? This new work focuses on something that affects everyone in unique ways: home as a feeling of belonging—in one's country, in one’s family, in one’s body. How do we navigate the moments when that feeling is and isn’t present in environments where we might expect it to be? Home[sic] was developed over many years. Elizabeth completed the script thanks to The Solo Project, generously sponsored by Amy Hill with support from EWP Arts Education for East West Players, where the work in progress had a staged reading on May 18, 2025.
